Navigating the New Galleries

Newer galleries (as of May 2007) have been created in Adobe Lightroom using a version of the "SlimBox" gallery template which I modified significantly. All thumbnails of an individual gallery show up as a long scrolling page. When a thumbnail is clicked, the background window darkens and one gets a larger version of the image in a floating window.

All three image sizes (thumbnail / large / zoomed) are fully colour-managed and saved with embedded sRGB IEC61966-2.1 ICC profiles. Browsers that are ICC complient will give an accurate colour rendition, whereas others may be slightly off.

In the dark panel below the larger image, the filename and caption (if the image has one) appear in light blue text. Some galleries may also show basic EXIF metadata. The floating image window has various controls as described below:

    Previous Image (left arrow)
    Next Image (right arrow)
    Back to thumbnail index page

[zoom image]  -  Open larger image
or  [email]  -  Send me an email

[?]  -  Open help page in a new window

[ home - galleries - page top ]  -   Links at bottom of thumbnail index pages go to the home page, the gallery page and the top of the current index page

Note that the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard may be used to move through the images! When your mouse cursor hovers over the left or right side of the displayed image, arrows appear near the top which indicate which direction you will go when clicking. When the correct left or right arrow appears, you can just click directly on the image - you do not have to actually click on the arrow itself! You can also click anywhere behind the floating window on the grayed-out thumbnails to return to the index page.

The new galleries make use of javascript, CSS and XML and should be compatible with the majority of modern web browsers. The galleries have been tested compatible on Mac OS X with current (May 2007) versions of Safari, Firefox, Netscape and Opera as well as on Windows XP with Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, Netscape and Opera. The exception are versions of Windows Internet Explorer prior to 7 as they seem to have a problem with XML declarations. These galleries do not make use of Adobe (Macromedia) Flash or JAVA code.

Netscape users (on both Mac and Windows) are recommended to use their keyboard arrow keys to navigate between larger images as Netscape leaves unsightly lines on the larger images when they are clicked on directly!

Finally, my sincerest apologies to those using older web-browsers or those with slow Internet connections; I do realize that these new galleries are somewhat bandwidth intensive...

Navigation Buttons for HTML Galleries
(pre-May 2007)

When you view the individual images in the gallery, you can click the magnifier near the top right of each image for a larger view in a new window. On the thumbnail page, you can also click on the page number (shown between the previous and next buttons) to switch to that page directly. Here is a brief description of the controls:

Move to previous page or image
Move to next page or image
    Back to thumbnail index page
  Back to the Home Page
or New window with magnified view
Send me an email about the image

Image Colour Management

Note that image thumbnails and "framed" gallery images do not have embedded ICC profiles but the larger images that open in their own window do. This could lead to slight differences in colour if your web-browser supports colour management. Take the larger, unframed images as having the "correct" and intended colour.

Update, May 15, 2005: I have run across some annoying changes in how images are rendered by the gallery creation software I use (see below). Note that it seems more an issue with the new OS I am running (Mac OS X v10.4) and how it interacts with this software than any problem with the software itself. Therefore, until further notice, my newer galleries (as of this date) will no longer have embedded profiles in the full-size images. Rather, all the images will be converted to a standard sRGB colour-space and have the embedded profiles stripped out. This should offer better consistency between the framed gallery images and the zoomed in full-size versions as well on ICC-compliant browsers. If you are viewing my full-size images in newer versions of Adobe Photoshop, make sure you tell Photoshop to use sRGB as the image's colorspace -and use a calbibrated monitor!- to ensure that the images display correctly.

Gallery Creation Software

I use an excellent program called Galerie (by Myriad Software) to generate all the image galleries on this website. It offers great flexibility, comes with a number of predefined templates, and is also totally customizable. I have totally reworked one of the templates (replaced the button graphics, image frames and layout) and use this for all the galleries on this site. I find it to be one of the most easily customized programs out there - highly recommended.. and it's free too!

Web Server Note

As of July 7th 2008, my entire website, and all the image galleries, are now residing on a new server and I am no longer hosting galleries from an alternate server. No more "funny" port 8008 or any such weird URLs so basically everyone now, no matter how picky their firewall, should be able to view all my galleries!

Please, if you notice that any of my galleries are down for an extended period or not functioning properly, please email me and let me know...
